VOICES FROM THE BAKERY

FLORENCE KAYESU

“My name is Florence Kayesu, a refugee from Rwanda. I’m so grateful for the work of ADAMÂ! ADAMÂ was surely sent by God. They came at a time I needed them most. I was almost giving up because of the conditions in Oruchinga Refugee camp. It is hard to get what to eat, my children had dropped out of school and I was looking at myself as a total failure. I could not see life after tomorrow. I’m now so grateful of who I am and so proud to be part of ADAMÂ. My house was in poor shape and every time it would rain I would be worried about how we would sleep because rain would come inside the house. ADAMÂ renovated my house. It is honestly hard to believe but I now sleep like a queen and that gives me hope that life can change and I have strong optimism for my future. Thank you so much to Ayelet and everyone who supports this cause!!”

We completed construction of the new bakery building!

March 2024

Building the
ADAMÂ Compound

After securing the land and finishing construction of the new kitchen, we began a campaign to raise money for the new bakery structure and to complete the rest of the ADAMÂ compound. Jeffrey Hamelman led a GoFundMe campaign with the generous help of Bread Bakers Guild of America members that contributed a significant amount to the construction budget.  With the support of many other private donors we were able to complete the new bakery structure and the compound.

The building was designed by architect Daniele Cohen who traveled to Oruchinga in January of 2024, along with our founder, Ayelet Berman-Cohen.  Angella Kushememerwa and Sophie Nakayiza led our spirited 20-person construction team, who completed the entire project in under three months.

Feeding the Children

Friday Giving Initiative

We have started a new initiative called FRIDAY GIVING, where, every other week, we visit one of the 12 different villages in the Oruchinga camp and distribute porridge and bread to over 500 children.

The Renovations Have Begun!

Shelter Renovation Project

ADAMÂ is committed to helping provide for the basic needs of the refugee community. The Shelter Renovation Project repairs and restores the homes of their refugee bakers. In its next phase, the program will work to rebuild the homes occupied by families of orphans, whose oldest siblings act as parents to their younger brothers and sisters.

At this point we have completed renovating the houses of four of our bakers.  We have twelve more houses to go.

VOICES FROM THE BAKERY

RYAN BAGUMA

“My name is Ryan Baguma, a refugee from Congo. My family consists of 12 people. Life was difficult for us before I joined ADAMÂ. There used to be days we would sleep without eating but since I joined ADAMÂ we have never gone to bed hungry! My family is so grateful to ADAMÂ for renovating my house. Now so many of my family members can live with me. This has brought us so much joy! Long live ADAMÂ.”

The Path to Sustainability

The ADAMÂ Bakery is charting its own path toward a sustainable future with the purchase of a new milling machine. Currently, we are forging relationships with Ugandan farmers to buy homegrown wheat in large enough quantities to offset the wildly fluctuating price of flour on the global market.

Our bakers will undergo a month-long training on the milling machine, courtesy of support from a bakery in neighboring Tanzania.
